Short videos and printable guides for every step of the tools, using made-up example schools. Watch the one for the step you’re on; inside each tool, “Help for this step” shows the same video and guide pages.

How the work goes

  1. Get set up

One person signs in, claims your school with its claim code, and invites the team. About 15 minutes.

  2. Needs assessment

Review your data, rate the needs together, talk through disagreement and choose one to three priorities. Two meetings of about 90 minutes.

  3. Root cause

For each priority, find the causes your school can act on and end with proposal-ready text. One or two meetings of about 90 minutes.

  4. Interventions

For each domain you selected, choose evidence-based interventions from the IPG menu that fit your root causes and write the application section. One or two meetings of about 90 minutes.

  5. Plan

Write your MICIP goals and MI School Index targets, your progress reporting, and your Year 1 budget activities from the interventions you chose. One or two meetings of about 90 minutes.

MTSS at the secondary level

3 videos

Why multi-tiered systems of support so often fall short in middle and high schools, how secondary MTSS differs from elementary, and how to check whether your own system is doing what it was built to do.

  1. 1. Why MTSS fails at the secondary level

    About 31 minutes

What we know about why multi-tiered systems of support break down, especially in middle and high schools.

  2. 2. Elementary and secondary MTSS: what's the same and what's different

    About 32 minutes

How MTSS at the secondary level shares the elementary model's foundations and where it has to work differently.

  3. 3. Auditing your MTSS implementation

    About 15 minutes

Actions school leaders can take to check whether their current MTSS is actually reaching its goals.

Short course: Choosing an Evidence-Based Intervention That Fits

8 modules

Short modules on what counts as evidence and how to choose an intervention that fits your students, your setting, and your goals. Each has a video, a one-page handout and a team activity built to help you select interventions and document them for your IPG application; by the last module your team has a draft of the EBI section of your plan.

  1. Module 1: What makes an intervention evidence-based
  2. Module 2: Reading the evidence label
  3. Module 3: How strong is the evidence, and what can you claim
  4. Module 4: Starting from the need, not the program
  5. Module 5: Judging fit for your school
  6. Optional Module A: Taking apart an existing school design
  7. Optional Module B: Checking fidelity to core components
  8. Module 6: Writing the EBI choice into your plan

Short course: Domains for intervention

5 videos

What the grant allows in each domain, and what to weigh in choosing an intervention that fits your root causes and meets the federal evidence requirements. Watch the ones for the domains your team is considering.

  1. 1. MTSS for chronic absenteeism

    About 43 minutes

The root causes a school may find behind chronic absence, and the components and evidence-based models of a multi-tiered system of support for attendance.

  2. 2. MTSS for student social and mental health

    About 59 minutes

Root causes in student diagnoses, behavior referrals and mental health intervention, and how a tiered system of support responds to them.

  3. 3. Leadership coaching and professional development

    About 43 minutes

Coaching and professional learning for building leaders, tied to your root causes and connected to an evidence-based intervention in MTSS or removing barriers.

  4. 4. Removing barriers

    About 48 minutes

Naming your local barriers and the measures that track them, with examples of evidence-based interventions at the secondary level.

  5. 5. Removing barriers in alternative schools

    About 54 minutes

Design considerations for alternative and virtual schools: finding the parts of your school design the grant can strengthen or supplement, and the interventions with evidence behind them.

If your team gets stuck

The tools are free for every eligible school, and most teams can work through them with the videos and guides. If you’d like another set of eyes, here is what’s available.

Office hours

Four sessions, all Eastern time:

  • Friday, November 13, noon to 1:30 p.m.
  • Friday, November 20, noon to 1:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 24, noon to 1:30 p.m.
  • Monday, November 30, 9 to 10 a.m.

Bring questions about the grant or the tools. The first 30 minutes answer questions sent in ahead of time; the rest is open for questions live. Anything that needs more research is answered in the first half hour of the next session. Each session also covers what the research says about evidence-based interventions in the three IPG domains: removing barriers, MTSS and building leadership.

Sign up once on the office hours form and you’ll get the link to each session by email. You can also ask for the recordings if you can’t join live, and send your questions ahead of time on the same form.

A consultation about the grant

If your school or district would like to talk through its application one-on-one, such as which domain fits your root causes, which interventions to consider, or how the parts of your plan fit together, request a consultation. Tell us a little about your school and what you’d like to discuss, and S4IS will follow up to set a time.
