Removing locally identified barriers to student achievement

1. Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI). A supplemental reading course for middle school students reading below grade level that combines word study, fluency practice, and discussion of novels and nonfiction. Curriculum materials are free to download. We will add a daily 45-minute intervention period for grades 7 and 8 and use it to teach STARI to students reading below grade level, in small sections led by a reading teacher. Evidence: Tier 1 (strong) for word recognition, grades 6-8, filed by the WWC (April 2026, Standards 5.0) under the phonics domain. Not reading comprehension. 2. ASSISTments (online math practice with immediate feedback). A free online tool that gives students immediate feedback and hints on math homework and gives teachers item-level reports to plan re-teaching. Teachers assign problems from their existing curriculum. We will use the same intervention period for students below benchmark in math, who will work practice problems from their current math lessons with immediate feedback while a math teacher uses the item reports to reteach. Evidence: Tier 1 (strong) for grade 7 math achievement (ASSISTments).

1. Master schedule, 2025-26: no intervention period and 0 minutes of added math or ELA time per week; fall 2025 benchmark screening: 58% of grade 7 and 8 students below benchmark in reading and 64% in math. The root cause is RC11 Time, schedule, and school structures and RC5 Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention capacity, which the school can address. Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI) addresses this root cause by giving students who read below grade level a daily STARI section in the new intervention period, so they get added reading time without missing a core class. 2. Master schedule, 2025-26: no intervention period and 0 minutes of added math or ELA time per week; fall 2025 benchmark screening: 58% of grade 7 and 8 students below benchmark in reading and 64% in math. 1. Growth: ELA: Indirect link. The studied effect is word reading, not the reading comprehension that state ELA tests measure. We will track fall-to-spring reading benchmark growth for students in the intervention period to check it. Proficiency: ELA: Indirect link. The studies measured word reading in grades 6-8, and the effect on reading comprehension is uncertain. We will track reading benchmark results for students in the intervention period each term to check it. 2. Growth: Math: Direct link. The studies measured this outcome (grade 7 math, with a grade 8 math test one year later). Proficiency: Math: Direct link. The studies measured this outcome (grade 7 TerraNova and grade 8 North Carolina EOG math).

Implementation of MTSS

Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST). A universal classroom program that builds self-management, social, and drug-resistance skills, with 15 core sessions in year 1, 10 booster sessions in year 2, and 5 in year 3. Optional violence prevention lessons are available. We will teach the LifeSkills Training core lessons to every grade 7 student and the booster lessons in grade 8, as the universal Tier 1 layer of our MTSS behavior work. Evidence: Tier 3 (promising) for substance use and behavior outcomes, grades 6-7 (Blueprints-certified RCTs; no WWC review).

EBI alignment to needs assessment/root cause

Discipline records, 2024-25: out-of-school suspension rate 14.2%, and 61% of suspensions were for classroom disruption; staff survey, fall 2025: 23 of 41 teachers said they handle disruption with their own classroom rules. The root cause is RC7 Behavior systems and discipline practices, which the school can address. Botvin LifeSkills Training (LST) addresses this root cause by teaching every grade 7 and 8 student the same self-management and social skills lessons, which our behavior team will use as the base for shared schoolwide expectations and one referral process.

Other: School Quality: K-12 On-Track Attendance: Indirect link. The studies measured behavior and substance use, not attendance. Fewer suspensions mean fewer days out of school, so we will track the out-of-school suspension rate and days lost to suspension each month to check this pathway.
